I'm currently experimenting with both Medium and Substack (Substack as a free newsletter and Medium to reach an audience). For me, the key is keeping my Substack newsletter free. The service itself, is free as long as you don't go paid. There's actually a bit of discoverbility within the platform too, as I've noticed people other than my subscribers opening my newsletters.
